First remove any excess mud or dirt, then check the condition of the valve stems and valve caps. Look for cuts, tears, and irregular wear on both the tread and tire shoulders. Finding problems early is important as this can eliminate larger problems that require an early tire change.

2. Monitor tire pressure daily.
Incorrect tire pressure is the number one cause of premature tire failure on truck tractors. If you are a driver, having a tire gauge handy should be part of your daily check. As ambient temperatures change throughout the year, tire pressure will also change. Low tire pressure leads to extreme heat build-up, especially on the sidewalls of the tire, which leads to cracks. Excessive tire pressure leads to premature tread wear in the center of the tread pattern, resulting in a very uncomfortable ride. An easier way to monitor tire pressure is to use a tire pressure monitoring system if your OEM offers one. For example, Volvo articulated haulers from 35 to 60 tons are equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TMPS) as standard. Tire psi and temperature are relayed to the driver at all times via the in-cab co-pilot display. This system can also be added as an option for 25 and 30 tonne models or for older trucks that were supplied before it was available from our factory. Another handy feature of the Volvo vans is a sticker on the rear frame that gives the tire pressures for the front and rear tires for any tire manufacturer you might want to use on your trucks.

For wheel loaders, the TMPS is an app in Volvo Load Assist. The system can be configured to warn the operator of low/high pressure and high temperature for each individual tyre. When used, the maximum life of the tires can be achieved to avoid frequent tire changes. Fuel economy will also be affected, especially if tire pressure is lower than specified. By using the TPMS you can reduce fuel consumption and your total cost of ownership.

3. If available, use a 46 drive mode for your articulated trucks.

For drivers using Volvo articulated haulers, using the 46 operational mode as opposed to the constant 66 mode can really save tire wear. The Volvo 46 drive function shuts off power to the rear axle. On better-maintained haul roads where all-wheel drive is not required, the driver can choose to drive with only the front and center axles engaged. It’s like switching your 44 pickup back to two-wheel drive on a good-surface road. This results in less friction of the tread on the road surface, increased maneuverability and reduced stress on the entire truck drive train. Imagine how much these things are amplified in a 44 pick-up. Now apply the same concept to a four-wheel drive truck hauling 45 or up to 60 tons of dirt or rock.

4. Don’t overload your vans.
Many drivers like to get the most out of every ride, but your tires suffer, especially on longer rides. 20 years ago we saw most transport between 800 feet and a half mile one way. Now many of our customers are hauling materials two and a half to five miles to a landfill. Even if everything we discussed before is kept in check but you overload your truck and go farther than ever with way more tons than the tires are rated for, the money you made doing more on the truck will become , spent at the end for the tire change. To ensure more accurate loads, be sure to use an onboard weighing system if your van is equipped with one. All Volvo trucks are equipped with an on-board weighing system that tells the operator how many tonnes he is transporting. It also features a light system above both rearview mirrors for the backhoe or loader operator to observe. It’s a simple green, then amber, then red light system to give the charging unit operator an idea of how close they are to a full charge. Tire manufacturers are increasingly being asked to conduct an on-site TPMH (tonnes per mile hour) study to suggest the best tyre, pressure and load to achieve longer tire life.

5. Match the torque to your wheel loader applications.

Volvo wheel loaders and articulated hauler tires are probably the most expensive wearing parts on a wheel loader. Features that allow you to match your wheel loader’s torque to your jobsite conditions help reduce unnecessary tire spin and tire wear in poor or slippery terrain. It can drastically reduce tire wear. When you drive Volvo wheel loaders, our torque adjustment feature is called Rimpull Control and offers five different settings: 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and Off. By using Rimpull Control, you can extend tire life while reducing operating costs.

6. Keep your work area clean.
When operating wheel loaders on the face face, it is important to keep your work area clean by removing any rocks, debris, or sharp obstacles that can cut or damage the tires. Tracks can be installed to provide additional protection from damage-causing obstacles, but installing tracks will introduce some tire wear and require maintenance and additional weight for the machine, most likely increasing fuel consumption if you can monitor it throughout the day You really reduce excessive tire wear to keep your running costs in check. Reducing your daily fuel consumption is another way to lower your operating costs. These fuel saving tips may help.

If you are looking for a way to reduce maintenance costs, you should definitely look at the tires on your wheeled machines.
