Here are the steps to follow:

1. Check for fuel system leaks: Start by inspecting the fuel system for any signs of leaks. Make sure that the fuel line connector is tightened properly. Additionally, check the fuel level in the tank, as air can enter the system from the suction side between the fuel transfer pump and the tank.

2. Install a fuel flow meter: If possible, install an observation instrument called a fuel flow meter (Part No. 2P-8278) in the fuel return line. Ideally, place the meter in a straight section of the fuel line that is at least 304.8mm long. Do not install the meter in right-angle bends, safety valves, or check valves. Once installed, observe the fuel flow when the engine is started. Look for any air bubbles in the fuel. If there is no fuel in the meter, refill the fuel system. If the engine starts, check the air in the fuel at different engine speeds. If possible, run the engine assuming there is air in the fuel.

3. Install a second flow meter (if needed): If you observe too many bubbles in the fuel flow meter, install a second meter at the inlet of the fuel transfer pump. If a second meter is not available, remove the meter from the fuel return line and install it at the inlet of the fuel transfer pump. Again, observe the fuel flow when the engine is started and look for any air bubbles. Check the air in the fuel at different engine speeds. If excess air is not seen at the inlet of the fuel transfer pump, proceed to step 6. If too much air is seen at the inlet of the fuel transfer pump, the air is entering the system through the suction side of the fuel system in the oil transfer pump.

4. Pressurize the fuel tank: Apply 35 kPa pressure to the fuel tank. Do not exceed 55 kPa to avoid damaging the tank. Check the fuel line between the tank and the fuel transfer pump for any leaks. If there is an oil leak, repair it. Check the fuel pressure and ensure that the fuel transfer pump is functioning correctly.

5. Test external fuel supply: If the source of air is not found, disconnect the fuel tank supply line and connect an external fuel supply to the inlet of the fuel transfer pump. If this solves the problem, repair the fuel tank or the standpipe in the tank.

6. Check for damaged injection sleeves: If the injection sleeve is damaged or worn, combustion gases can leak into the fuel system. Also, check the O-ring on the injection sleeve for any damage or if it is missing.

To check the engine speed, you will need a suitable tool such as the 1U-6602 optical tachometer or the 9U-7400 multi-step tachometer tool. The 1U-6602 optical tachometer is a universal device that registers the basic input frequency for any visually rotating part. This tachometer measures the frequency of the pulses generated per revolution by each reflective strip. The 9U-7400 multi-step tachometer tool, on the other hand, measures the engine speed using an electromagnetic pickup sensor located in the flywheel housing.

CAT Caterpillar ET 4 Diagnostic Adapter Truck Diagnostic Tool-high quality

By following these steps, you can effectively check the air in the Caterpillar fuel system and ensure the proper functioning of your engine. Regular maintenance and inspection of the fuel system are crucial for optimal performance and longevity.

Checking the air in the fuel system of your Caterpillar engine is an important maintenance task that can help identify potential issues and ensure optimal performance.
