The pinion gear clearance on the electric starter motor of a Caterpillar excavator is an important adjustment that ensures proper engagement and operation of the motor. If the clearance is not set correctly, it can lead to issues such as gear slipping or excessive wear. In this article, we will guide you through the process of adjusting the pinion gear clearance on the Carter 325C excavator.
Before we begin, please note that this procedure should only be performed by trained professionals or individuals with sufficient knowledge and experience in working with heavy machinery. Incorrect adjustments can cause damage to the equipment or pose a safety risk.
Here are the steps to adjust the pinion gear clearance:
Step 1: Preparation
– Start by removing the starter motor from the excavator.
– Ensure that the solenoid coil is installed without connector 3, which is used to connect the MOTOR connector on the coil and the motor.
Step 2: Electrical Connections
– Connect a battery with the same voltage as the coil to terminal 2 of the “SW” switch.
– Connect the other side of the battery to connector 3.
– Connect the wire from the coil connector to the connector of the grounding device marked with the word “MOTOR”. This will cause the pinion to move towards the crankshaft and stay there until the battery is disconnected.
Step 3: Eliminate Free Movement
– Use the commutator to push the pinion towards the end to eliminate any free movement.
Step 4: Check Pinion Clearance
– To check the pinion clearance, refer to Figure 3-1-85. The clearance, denoted as 6, should measure 9.1mm.
Step 5: Adjust Pinion Clearance
– To adjust the pinion clearance, remove the plug and locate the shaft nut 4.
– Turn the shaft nut 4 to increase or decrease the clearance as required.
– Be cautious while making adjustments, ensuring that the pinion gear is properly aligned and engaged with the flywheel.
Step 6: Finalizing the Adjustment
– After completing the adjustment, install the plug over the axle nut 4 and reconnect connector 3 between the MOTOR post on the coil and the starter motor.
It is crucial to conduct a thorough inspection and functional test of the starter motor after making any adjustments. Verify that the pinion gear engages smoothly and the clearance is within the specified range.
