Isuzu F-Series 6.7 Truck Shift Cable Adjustment/Replacement Guide

This guide provides a step-by-step process for adjusting and replacing the shift cable on Isuzu F-Series 6.7 trucks.

Check Procedure:

  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Block the wheels to prevent vehicle movement.
  3. Ensure you can fully shift into the P (Park) position.
  4. Press the shift lock button.
  5. Set the shift lever indicator to the N (Neutral) position, with the transmission shift lock controlling the shift lever.
  6. Check the shift lever indicator position. If the red strip is centered on N, no further adjustment is required.

Adjustment Procedure:

Note: Adjustments are made at the end of the cable, secured by a clamp and washer.

  1. Remove fasteners securing the shift control housing, and move it out of the way.
  2. Detach the shift cable from the shift control by removing the pin and washer. Move the cable end away from the shift housing pivot pin.

  3. Set the transmission shift shaft lever to neutral (N).
  4. Place the shift lever in neutral (N). You may need to override the BTSI (Brake Transmission Shift Interlock).
  5. Adjust cable tension by holding the cable eyelet and adjusting the tension screw until the eyelet fits freely over the pivot pin of the shift control.
  6. Install the washer and clip to secure the shift cable.
  7. Tighten the lock nuts on the tension adjustment screws.
  8. Ensure there is less than 2mm of free play when shifting from N to R, and less than 4mm of free play when shifting from N to D.

Shift Cable Replacement Procedure:

Removal Procedure:

  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Block the wheels.
  3. Place the shift lever in neutral (N).
  4. Remove the fasteners securing the shift control housing, and move it aside.

  7. Note the location of the bracket securing the cable to the frame. Remove the screws and the bracket securing the shift cable to the frame rail.
  8. Remove the grommet securing the shift cable to the cab.
  9. Remove the shift cable entirely.

Installation Procedure:

  1. Position the new shift cable in the original location.

Note: Ensure both the shift control lever and the transmission shift lever are in the mechanical neutral position.  The transmission’s mechanical neutral is two clicks away from the lowest position.

  1. Secure the cable to the frame rail with screws and clamps.
  2. Install grommets to attach the shift cable to the cab.
  3. Tighten the screws to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) on the frame and bracket.
