This guide provides a step-by-step process for adjusting and replacing the shift cable on Isuzu F-Series 6.7 trucks.
Check Procedure:
- Turn off the ignition.
- Block the wheels to prevent vehicle movement.
- Ensure you can fully shift into the P (Park) position.
- Press the shift lock button.
- Set the shift lever indicator to the N (Neutral) position, with the transmission shift lock controlling the shift lever.
- Check the shift lever indicator position. If the red strip is centered on N, no further adjustment is required.
Adjustment Procedure:
Note: Adjustments are made at the end of the cable, secured by a clamp and washer.
- Remove fasteners securing the shift control housing, and move it out of the way.
- Detach the shift cable from the shift control by removing the pin and washer. Move the cable end away from the shift housing pivot pin.
- Set the transmission shift shaft lever to neutral (N).
- Place the shift lever in neutral (N). You may need to override the BTSI (Brake Transmission Shift Interlock).
- Adjust cable tension by holding the cable eyelet and adjusting the tension screw until the eyelet fits freely over the pivot pin of the shift control.
- Install the washer and clip to secure the shift cable.
- Tighten the lock nuts on the tension adjustment screws.
- Ensure there is less than 2mm of free play when shifting from N to R, and less than 4mm of free play when shifting from N to D.
Shift Cable Replacement Procedure:
Removal Procedure:
- Turn off the ignition.
- Block the wheels.
- Place the shift lever in neutral (N).
- Remove the fasteners securing the shift control housing, and move it aside.
- Detach the shift cable from the shift control by removing fasteners and clips.

- Remove the grommet securing the shift cable to the cab.
- Remove the shift cable entirely.
Installation Procedure:

- Position the new shift cable in the original location.
Note: Ensure both the shift control lever and the transmission shift lever are in the mechanical neutral position. The transmission’s mechanical neutral is two clicks away from the lowest position.
- Secure the cable to the frame rail with screws and clamps.
- Install grommets to attach the shift cable to the cab.
- Tighten the screws to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) on the frame and bracket.
- Tighten the nuts to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft) on the shift control.
- Adjust the shift cable as described earlier.
- Reattach the shift control housing to the shift control with fasteners.
Following these steps will ensure that the shift cable on the Isuzu F-Series 6.7 is correctly adjusted or replaced, restoring smooth and accurate shifting operation.
